9 times Cricketers & Bollywood Actresses made for a toxic combination

What is it about cricketers and Bollywood actresses? Over the years, too many cricketers seem to have been bowled over by heroines. There’s just one problem – more often than not, these romances have fizzled out. The latest being Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli.

9. Virat Kohli-Anushka Sharma

Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli began dating in 2013 and all seemed to be hunky-dory until rumours of their split surfaced last week (Anushka turns down Virat’s marriage proposal, Feb 1). The two have broken up (for now, at least) and there seems to be no reconciliation in the near horizon, at least. While Anushka has dived headlong into work, we hear, the cricketer is back to his single ways – at a recent party, Virat owned the dance floor, telling everyone how he is single and happy.

8. Zaheer Khan-Isha Sharvani

Isha’s love story with Zaheer was pretty similar to her Bollywood career – it went nowhere. The duo began dating in 2004 and went strong for 8 years. However, the two called it off in 2012. While Isha was based in Chennai, Zaheer would keep travelling for his tournaments and their growing distance was reportedly the reason for their split.

7. Yuvraj Singh-Kim Sharma

Yuvraj Singh’s fascination with Bollywood beauties began in 2003 when he started dating Kim Sharma. The two were in a steady relationship for 4 years until Kim’s obsessive behaviour got the better of him.

6. Imran Khan-Zeenat Aman

This one was one of our favourite couples for obvious reasons. Come on, Imran Khan was as dashing as they come and Zeenat Aman, one of the sexiest women in Bollywood. Can you imagine a more glamorous couple? However, this affair was short-lived and Zeenat then went on to marry Mazhar Khan.

5. Ravi Shastri-Amrita Singh

In the mid-80s, Ravi Shastri and Amrita Singh were the toast of the town. He – a celebrated cricketer, she – a rising star. Pyaar toh hona hi tha.  After giving out interviews to magazines and dailies where they professed their love for each other, this relationship died a natural death.

4. Mohsin Khan-Reena Roy

The actress fell madly in love with the charming Pakistani cricketer – so much so she quit the industry at the height of her success to marry Mohsin in 1983. However, their marriage was short-lived. Another Bollywood-cricket love story that bit the dust.

3. Mohammad Azharuddin-Sangeeta Bijlani

Okay, so this romance went up to the altar – Azhar divorced his first wife Naureen and married Sangeeta in 1996. And it seemed that they would live happily ever after too. However, their 14-year marriage came crumbling down when he was rumoured to be involved with Jwala Gutta.

2. Sourav Ganguly-Nagma

The much-married Sourav made headlines in 2001 when news of his relationship with Nagma came out in the open. Rumours even suggested that the two had got married secretly. This love triangle caught everyone’s attention. So what happened? Nagma stated in an interview that they broke up because Sourav’s career was at stake.

1. Vivian Richards-Neena Gupta

This was the biggest one for us. It caught everyone's attention - and with good reason. Vivian and Neena even had a child out of wedlock, none other than celeb designer Masaba Gupta.

There have been only a few romances that made it through – Harbhajan Singh-Geeta Basra and Mansoor Ali Khan-Sharmila Tagore. Yuvraj Singh too is expected to tie the knot with Hazel Keech this year. Let’s see what happens.
